The Blue Harp Curse Page 5

Rynzius and Grannum were helped by the guards to the nearest temple where healers would tend to them. The rest of the guards found and began restraining Lorvar, who was still alive. Avalyn went with the guards helping Rynzius and Grannum to tell them of all that had happened that night, or as much of it that she knew. The truth was she was still terrified and confused and felt safer with Rynzius and Grannum.

While lying on stone tables two healers chanted and made gestures over Rynzius and Grannum, and their wounds slowly faded. While this was being done a fellow watchman, and a mage, walked in and sat down near the stone tables.

“My name is Dravdil. Captain Vinlurrus is on his way now.” He said very softly. “Would you mind telling me what happened while we wait? I heard you needed assistance with another mage, not a berserking bartender. He will be alright by the way; I know he is, or was, a friend of yours.”

Rynzius and Grannum both chuckled a little, then began at the beginning of the whole thing.

As Dravdil got up to leave Avalyn asked him quickly, “How long do you think they will be here?”

“Well, Grannum should be out by morning. Rynzius may take a full days healing. Wounds from magical fire, believe it or not, are harder to heal than regular fire.” He answered.

Later in the early morning hours a group of guards and Dravdil searched through the Blue Harp and found something in the large bedroom behind the bar which was Lorvar’s. Dravdil felt something almost emanating from it. When they searched around his bed they found a small stone with a strange symbol on it hidden under the bed.

That afternoon he paid Rynzius and Grannum a visit at the healer’s. Grannum was out by now, but was there visiting Rynzius already. So was Avalyn.

“After having heard everything you two witnessed and did last night I am guessing that mage who chose to end his own life rather than be interrogated planted an object in Lorvar’s bedroom to let the curse sort of infect him. I found the object and removed it. One of the healers from this very temple is doing a cleansing spell there as we speak. Each night, after the infection of this curse had settled in enough, the mage would come in to pick a particular victim from the Blue Harp, and chanted to sort of activate Lorvar. After that he would be overcome by the curse and once the opportunity presented itself he would find the person and kill them. He would then probably return to the tavern and go to sleep, having no memory of it.”

“By the gods, that’s horrible!” Grannum said. “But, what about Lorvar? Can the curse be removed?”

“Well,” Dravdil said. “The curse had plenty of time to attach itself to him strongly, but it can be done. He is currently at the Anakara Temple in the Tosharis District. However, he will probably be there for a while. And when he is released he will have to deal with all that has happened, which only he can do himself.” Dravdil added.

Rynzius’ face seemed to pull down after Dravdil left. “Why would someone do something like this Grannum? There was no reason.”

Grannum sighed and shook his head. “I don’t know lad. Some people don’t have a reason for doing the terrible things they do. At least the man behind it is gone now.” Grannum looked over at Avalyn then back at Rynzius. “Anyway, I’ll be going off to get some rest now lad. I’ll see you later.”

Grannum made his way down the hall to the temple doors.

Avalyn sat beside Rynzius and held his hand. “Dravdil said you would probably be released after a full day. Then you can escort me through the gardens. If you still want to keep me safe that is.”

Rynzius smiled, “Of course I will.”

On the other side of the city sat an abandoned house. The house had been abandoned years before by a young couple after they lost their child to illness. The house had fallen into disrepair and would remain so until purchased by another. However, the house was being used all the same. Men had entered the home late this evening.

They had met there late at night several times over the last few months. They stood, gathered around a stone table they had placed in the cellar of the house. It had been hours since they met and whatever things they said were long over.

It was clear by their arrangement that one spot was empty; someone who should have been there was not.

Now was just silence. Standing in a circle around the table; a small stone, with strange symbols in front of each of them. The chanting had ending not long ago and the symbols still glowed freshly on the smooth surfaces of each stone.

Still silent, a gentle understanding was passing between them. Without a word each of them reached out to pick up the objects on the table. Each man reached out and picked up his stone. He held it for a moment, an unusual smile forming on what little of his cloaked face was visible. As each placed the stones in their cloaks they quietly left the cellar; going in different directions of the city.

  Author’s Afterward

I have been writing for many years now, usually in the genres of fantasy, science fiction and horror, among others. It is my goal to create a series of stories (both short and novel length) in each genre to develop a detailed and full world in each. This small story is set in one city in a much larger world which I hope I am given the opportunity to expand upon.

In the end, I would like to thank you for downloading this story of mine and I hoped you enjoyed it and will look for more stories from me in the future. If you did not enjoy the story, well, there isn’t much I can say but – I’ll try and do better next time.
